Marriage Equality in California. Now what?

Now that the reality of this victory for freedom to marry has settled in, there are questions to be answered. Here’s what we know. The decision becomes final on June 14, 2008. Beginning then, the state must make sure revised marriage license applications are ready to be issued to same sex couples.

Right now, we don’t know if counties ready to get started can begin issuing marriage licenses immediately. Our best guess is that marriages can begin in mid-June, but we can’t yet give you an exact date. Los Angeles County has announced it will begin issuing licenses to same-sex couples on June 16. To obtain information about other counties, check with that county's clerk.
