Dixie Chicks: It Didn't Take 'Courage' to Stand Up for Free Speech

Wednesday, February 14, 2007 permalink

Pop-music superstars the Dixie Chicks just won five Grammy Awards. But before that they took home the ACLU/SC's prize for standing up for free speech.

In 2003, the Dixie Chicks faced boycotts by country-music stations after they spoke out against the Iraq invasion.

Singer Natalie Maines (pictured) discussed the episode at the ACLU/SC's Bill of Rights Awards in December. "It hasn't taken courage to stand strong, just a first-grade education," she said. "Even in Lubbock, Texas, we learn about freedom of speech."
