Prisoners’ Rights Advocate/Jails Project Coordinator

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California, a nonprofit organization defending civil liberties and civil rights, is seeking a Prisoners’ Rights Advocate/Jails Project Coordinator with direct work experience with prisoners and/or other marginalized populations. Individuals knowledgeable of conditions in the Los Angeles County jails are encouraged to
apply. Other job duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate and advocate for improved conditions at the L.A. County jail facilities. Requires visits to jail facilities, reviewing documents, and interviewing prisoners
    and their families.

  • Communicate regularly with the Sheriff’s Department and ACLU attorneys regarding jail conditions and systemic problems. Includes writing reports from jail visits, meeting with county officials about ongoing problems, drafting prisoner declarations, and regularly meeting with ACLU lawyers regarding jail conditions.

  • Supervise a team of volunteers who work on the project. Includes recruiting, interviewing, and supervising undergraduate and law student interns.

  • Network/communicate with community on jail/prison issues. Includes facilitating quarterly meeting of ACLU Jails Project task force, conducting public presentations about LA jail conditions, and working with ACLU media and field teams to educate the public on jails/criminal justice issues.


Qualifications:
  • Direct work experience with prisoners and/or other marginalized populations.

  • B.A./B.S. or degree equivalent. Social services experience a plus.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

  • Fluency in Spanish. Being bilingual, particularly English-Spanish, is a substantial plus.

  • Must be able to work independently.

  • Excellent judgment. Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Relevant advanced degree a plus.

  • Experience working with or supervising interns/volunteers preferred.

  • Experience working with attorneys preferred.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice and/or mental health systems preferred.
