Field and Policy Associate
The Field and Policy Associate works in two capacities. The Field and Policy Associate coordinates and facilitates the ACLU/SC’s legislative and policy endorsement process and works to support and further the efforts of ACLU/SC chapters under the direction of the Field Manager.
The Field and Policy Associate coordinates the organization’s internal endorsement process to assure that endorsement and legislative requests fall within ACLU and/or ACLU/SC standing policy. He/she collects and centrally manages legislative and endorsement information for the organization.
As part of the Field Department, the Field and Policy Associate works to support existing networks of chapters and disseminates materials and public education information to chapters on priority issues/legislation/initiatives, plan and mobilize chapter members for public events/rallies and higher level actions such as lobby visits.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Serve as liaison and contact person between chapter activists and affiliate staff.
- Based on the needs and priorities of the Field Department, maintain and coordinate regular communication with ACLU/SC chapters and respond to their requests.
- Assist chapters in developing tools and systems to support chapter growth and activity, specifically in under-represented ACLU/SC areas.
- Maintain records for chapter recertification, finances and elections.
- Assist chapters with planning and carrying out chapter events, such as facilitating speaker requests, obtaining affiliate approval of all chapter produced materials and forums.
- Staff Chapter Council meetings.
- Coordinate, prepare and carry out chapter mailings.
- Coordinate and facilitate organization’s sign-on process for issue-based campaign endorsements, sign-on letters, participation in local events, etc.
- Collect and centrally manage organization’s legislative and endorsement information (i.e. to respond to future media requests, historical inquiries, etc.).
- Provide chapters with relevant legislative and policy materials and information.
- Coordinate the internal feedback and sign-on process with staff (ACLU/SC, National DC Legislative Office, Sacramento Legislative Office) and board committees on pending legislation, initiative campaigns in-the-works, federal/state/local campaigns.
- Research and monitor state initiatives/propositions as submitted to the Attorney General’s office and cleared for signature gathering by Secretary of State’s office. Compile feedback from relevant staff experts and board committees for review/vetting with organization’s Initiatives Process Committee (to determine recommended ACLU/SC positions on ballot initiatives and campaign involvement).
- 20% of time will be allocated to assisting Jails Project. Responsibilities include monitoring and advocating for improved conditions at all L.A. County jail facilities. This requires visits to the facilities, inspecting internal jail logs, and interviewing prisoners.
Prepare written reports on jail visits. Take declarations from prisoners regarding jail conditions. - Work demands may require occasional working evenings and weekends.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate must be passionate about field organizing, advocacy and policy work. Candidate with a demonstrated ability to work independently highly desired. Two – five years relevant experience in southern California, particularly working or volunteering for community groups, legal organizations or organized labor.
- The position is full-time. Compensation is based on community relations, work experience and education.
