Mike Farrell, activist, author and actor, recipient of the Stanley K. Sheinbaum Award. He is also board chair of Death Penalty Focus, co-chair emeritus of the California Committee of Human Rights Watch. A life-long opponent of the death penalty and an advocate of prison reform, Farrell has visited prisons and been involved in death cases across the U.S. for over a quarter of a century.
Ryan Murphy, creator of the hit television show Glee, recipient of the Social Responsibility in the Media Award. Glee addresses civil liberties and civil rights issues in an entertaining way, introducing them to a younger audience who will be inspired to “carry the torch” forward in the future. The ACLU has been mentioned twice on the show, in episodes involving equal rights for same-sex couples parents and job discrimination faced by people with disabilities. Glee was recently nominated for 19 Emmy Awards. Among other projects, Murphy directed the soon-to-be released film Eat Pray Love.
Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, (D-Santa Monica), recipient of the Legislator of the Year Award.
