Charles Ogletree: The Presumption of Guilt

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, July 16, 2009, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., a renowned Harvard professor acclaimed for his work on racial justice, was arrested by a Cambridge police sergeant. The reasons for the arrest would come under scrutiny, raise questions about racial profiling, and set off a firestorm in the media, finally culminating in a much publicized “beer summit” where the policeman and the professor came face to face at the White House.
In The Presumption of Guilt: The Arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. And Race, Class and Crime in America, one of the country’s foremost experts on civil rights puts the now infamous event in the context of the complicated history that exists at the intersection of race, class, and crime in America.
Charles Ogletree is the Jesse Climenko Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and the founding and executive director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at the law school. He is the author of the critically acclaimed All Deliberate Speed, and has received numerous awards and honors, including being named one of the 100+ Most Influential Black Americans by Ebony Magazine. In the immediate aftermath of the Crowley-Gates incident, Ogletree acted not only as counsel to Professor Gates but continues to act as advisor on police behavior to both Harvard University and the City of Cambridge. He was a senior advisor to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
