Live Reading: Hollywood vs. HUAC, 60 Years Later
Friday, October 26, 2007

In October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee held its infamous hearings into alleged Communist influence in the movies. They found none, but that didn’t stop the film industry from triggering a 21-year blacklist whose challenges to the First Amendment continue to chill the arts and media.
In the middle of those hearings, a group of entertainment and political personalities known as the Committee for the First Amendment took to the airwaves to speak their minds in support of free speech and to encourage America to do the same.
Titled "Hollywood Fights Back," and airing on October 26 and November 2, 1947, these two historic broadcasts by the Committee for the First Amendment will be re-created by a celebrity cast in live performance on Friday, October 26, at the Skirball Cultural Center. The event benefits the ACLU Foundation of Southern California. Join us for an exciting evening.
