Chapters
The work of the ACLU could not be accomplished without the ongoing efforts of its chapter members. Each affiliate has chapters which help to do local lobbying and serve as extensions of the organization. Chapter activists monitor local school boards, city councils, county supervisors and community issues to help protect civil liberties and civil rights. Chapter activists also sponsor public forums and help to educate their communities about current issues.
Take a look at the chapter listings below to see what's afoot in your area.

Sunday, Oct. 24, 3-4 p.m. ACLU Takes a Look at the Death Penalty in California. The ACLU has been working to end death sentencing on constitutional grounds of cruel and unusual punishment. Today Los Angeles County has become the national leader in death sentencing, sending more people to death row in 2009 than the entire state of Texas. This alarming trend comes at an enormous cost: during a budget crunch, California is poised to spend $1 billion over the next five years on this dysfunctional and costly system. It provides hollow justice for victims’ families, who spend decades enduring appeals and clemency hearings. Come learn why permanent imprisonment is a safe and cost-effective alternative that provides swift and certain justice for prisoners and closure for victims' families. And find out how California can save a billion dollars without releasing a single prisoner. Viva Art Center, 13261 Moorpark St. (at Fulton), Sherman Oaks, CA 91423. Information: 818.385.0080

News & Events:
Thursday, August 26, 7-8:30 p.m. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, A Worldwide View. Over two hundred years ago, a new country launched a bold experiment in government. A key element was what we know today as the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, and specifically the section dealing with the relationship between government and religion. Enough time has passed that we can assess the benefits and limitations of this “experiment,” including the reality that not everyone is happy with it. From there the discussion will proceed to an ambitious, jet paced tour through other countries and societies, using the American model, comparing and contrasting what is in place around the globe. Come join us for this stimulating evening. Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E Janss Rd., Thousand Oaks, 91362 Information: 818.879.0462
