Oppose Mandatory Electronic Employment Verification

Launched: March 25, 2008

This Action Expired: June 16, 2008

Description:

We can't gamble on this one.

Leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) led by Rep. Javier Becerra and Rep. Joe Baca are about to take a losing bet on immigration reform.

Tell them their dealing will result in a lose-lose situation.

As part of their alternative to the badly flawed immigration bill known as the SAVE Act, they're willing to roll the dice on that unprecedented, seriously flawed database nightmare, Mandatory Electronic Employment Verification. Immigration "reformers" such as Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado) and Heath Schuler (D-North Carolina) believe this error ridden database is a winner in their "war on immigration" so they're using it as a chit in exchange for what CHC wants to include in the bill too: a stand alone, short term program of temporary worker visas. Odds are this bill doesn't stand a chance of passing congress over fears of "amnesty" so the CHC will be giving away a valuable card for absolutely no payoff.

Here's How We Win:

  • Pass the H-2B bill now in the House to get more visas for seasonal workers. This should be pushed by our friends in Congress without any tinkering. These types of bills normally sail through without controversy. This one needs to be passed.

  • Stop the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088).

  • Tackle real immigration reform with our new president and congress next term.

Contact your Representatives NOW and tell them to play it smart.

We know people want relief for workers and families in the US. It just shouldn’t come at a price for all US workers and set a dangerous precedent.

The stakes are high! Make sure your voice gets heard!

Subject: Say No To Mandatory Employment Verification

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I'm writing as your constituent to voice my objection to both the SAVE Act and to the CHC trading mandatory employment verification for a dead end program of temporary work visas.

Our immigration crisis needs solutions, but this kind of negotiating is not the answer. Mandatory verification puts too much of a burden on businesses and employers in a weak economy and it risks workers being misidentified as unauthorized for employment. The solution right now is to pass the H-2B bill for seasonal workers, and then work towards comprehensive immigration reform with the new president and congress.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
