SB 1285: Protect Our Schools from Devastating Layoffs
Launched: August 6, 2010
This Action Expired: September 1, 2010
Description:
The Los Angeles Unified School District does what so many other school districts in fiscal crisis are doing, ordering budget-driven teacher layoffs that disproportionately affect children in poor neighborhoods, while leaving intact teaching staffs at well-off and high performing schools. That’s why we need your help to stop these discriminatory practices.
Earlier this year, the ACLU of Southern California sued to end this discriminatory practice at three Los Angeles schools, including one attended by Sharail Reed. At Sharail's junior high school, more than half of the teacher staff was laid off, and her history class was nothing more than a parade of substitute teachers.
A judge ended this practice at those three schools, but across the state this year, children at the most vulnerable schools in the toughest neighborhoods could be without regular teachers.
Stop budget-driven layoffs that hurt the neediest schools! Support Senate Bill 1285 to make education equal for all California students.
