ACLU-SC Jails Project
The ACLU – American Civil Liberties Union – is looking for volunteers to assist with the Jails Project. The Jails Project helps persons in the Los Angeles County jails to obtain medical care and other services. This is a good learning opportunity for any student thinking about a career in law or public service. All welcome to apply.
The Position: Assist in screening written and telephone requests by inmates for assistance regarding facility conditions and medical access in Los Angeles County jails. Assist Jails Project Coordinator to sort, analyze, and input replies from L.A. County Sheriff’s dept. Visit LA County jails to follow up on inmate complaints and monitor facilities in order to ensure they meet legal requirements.
Hours: Flexible schedule, about 8-10 hours per week or more, ideally 3-4 month commitment. Morning or afternoon shifts, 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.
Compensation: No pay, students may intern for school/community service credit or just for the exposure.
Qualifications: Must be committed, data entry/typing experience, good people skills.
